Data Sources and Limitations

Where directory data and citation data come from, and their limits.

Version 1.0, effective 10 October 2026

Journal details

Details of listed journals are supplied or confirmed by the journal’s owner, sometimes after being read automatically from the journal’s own website. Some unlisted records are created from open sources so that their editors can claim them; such records are not shown in the public directory until claimed and reviewed.

Open data sources

  • OpenAlex: an open catalogue of scholarly works and sources, released under a CC0 licence.
  • DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): open metadata about open-access journals.
  • ISSN Portal: used to confirm ISSN registration during review.

Use of these sources does not imply endorsement by them.

Limitations

ISSNs are checked for a valid check digit, which confirms the format, not registration; registration is checked during review. Citation coverage varies by subject, language and region, so citation indicators should be compared only between similar journals. Every citation result shows its source and retrieval date.

Removing a record

If an unlisted record about your journal was created from public data and you would like it removed, write to info@citeveriq.com from the journal’s official email and we will remove it.
